The name Lurid Land conjures up images of sleazy
nightclubs and ladies of the night hanging around
street-corners after your lunch money. Thankfully
everything is well above board and what we have here is
a slickly polished adaption of a classic game that until
now was only enjoyed by emulation nuts and LCD game
enthusiasts. So what's the idea? Well, each level is a
2D platforms and ladders affair, where you run about
finding keys and other objects that will help you get to
the exit. This by itself would be pathetically easy so
there's a legion of supernatural nasties hunting you
down. Thankfully you carry with you a rather special
device which will temporarily knock out a section of the
platform you're on, and timed well this means that your
paranormal stalker will be thrown off your scent
temporarily. Get the idea? Good, because each subsequent
level expands on this basic concept slowly until the
later stages become real tests of your brain as well as
your trigger finger. This might not win any awards for
originality or technical achievement but it certainly
does the business when it comes to solid gameplay that
is worth coming back to time and time again.
